Mitutoyo’s Absolute (ABS) system allows the instrument to retain its absolute position at all times, even after the instrument has been turned off*.
What are the benefits for the user in practical terms?
1. No matter how fast you move the slider or spindle, no count error will occur.
2. Even if the power is turned off *, there is no need for a zero set after the power is turned on.
3. Lower power consumption compared to the earlier incremental only encoder system.
In the case of ABS digital caliper a battery life of about 5 years (18000 hours consecutive) is achieved in normal use.

There are three types of Absolute encoder from Mitutoyo. Electromagnetic capacity, electromagnetic induction, and optical types. These are widely used in various measurements forming the backbone of a measurement system enhancing the reliability of the measured values.
